Time Machines Today

by Vince Poscente
Author of The Ant and the Elephant, Invinceable Principles and The Age of Speed

Time travel has been a popular theme in fiction since the nineteenth century. Instant feelings flood back when reminiscing about It's a Wonderful Life, Ground Hog Day and Back to the Future. In six months Audrey Niffenegger's amazing book, Time Traveller's Wife will be another time travel movie diving into this fantasy world. Fantasy be damned... exploring the advantages of jumping back or ahead in time is possible with technology of today.

We're not talking about time machines that follow the twin paradox metaphor - the phenomenon of time dilation velocity in special relativity or gravitational time dilation in general relativity. Best Buy doesn't stock Special Relativity X-Box's or General Relativity PS4's just yet.

We are talking about technology offered by Time Warner or Casio.

Time Warner has been testing the "Start Over" button in limited markets. This lets viewers start over any show in midstream. Hit the "Start Over" button and you can pick up the show from the beginning.

Think back a mere decade and this kind of technology would be sci-fi, pie in the sky.

Listen, if there are any Time Warner engineers reading this... I'm looking for the start over button with my wife when I'm blind-sided by:

* Does this make my butt look fat?

* How much did you spend on that thing-a-ma-jiggy?

* My sorority sister (a.k.a. - she's oil - I'm water) is visiting for two months this summer.

Then there's the newly released Casio Exilim EX-F1 helps you capture events you've missed, slow time down and even freeze time. How cool is that?

Actively recording an incredible sixty, six-mega-pixel frames per second before you fully press the shutter you can effectively go back in time during unpredictable scenarios. A killer whale jumping out of the water at Sea World, your two year-old giving a kiss to the family pet or said wife throwing a furry slipper at my head because I uttered the regrettable response of:

* Define fat?

* $3,000, on credit.

* Oh, greeeaaat?

When you press the button the camera captures the images just passed. Imagine the perfect shot as the toe of the furry slipper hits my temple and my face contorts into the "Crap, I shouldn't have said that!" look.

Casio's EX-F1 can also slow down what is happening in real time. Hence you can capture that exact image you're looking for.

Lights, camera, gotcha.

Time has always been precious. The amount of time we have is constant but the way we use time in the Age of Speed is critical to good decision-making.

Like how to think then say. Not say then think about how much time it will take to recover from what I should have thought to say in the first place.

Relativity Time Machines, please hurry up.
