Covid Campers Empathize, Connect, Collaborate

Posted by Vince Poscente on Thu, Mar 19, 2020 @ 01:56 PM

We have mismanaged focus, and I don't think we're fully aware of it.

Each of us have a focus-default on:

  •    "Where's my next sale coming from?
  •    "Where my next deal coming from?
  •    "Where my next paycheck coming from?"

Whatever your situation is, pause the stuckness regarding what's happening to you, and just extend your vision to what's happening to those in your world.

Then, we can start to lead three ways:

  1. First, is to Empathize, really explain that you understand what they're going through, your customer, your prospect. The people that are really freaked out right now.
  2. The second piece is to be able to Connect them with people in your network, connect them with people that have come through your door in the past. Connect them with ideas.
  3. And then third, Collaborate. That collaboration piece fits in as well, because we're able to then collaborate with them, and say, "Hey, I've got these ideas." It's changed times, so change the way we approach our connection with others, all right?

So Empathize, Connect, and Collaborate.

Covid Campers Provide Value

Posted by Vince Poscente on Wed, Mar 18, 2020 @ 02:16 PM

Hey, I'm trying not to make eye contact with my wife because she's got this honey-do list that'll take me down.

Anyways, to all the Covid Campers out there, sequestering yourself, remember this, we each have an expertise. We each have something that gives us energy. And our time to is now to provide more value.

You know, in times of trouble, that's the time to escalate the amount of value you could provide to people in your life. Obviously, providing that value is happening from a remote standpoint, and that's one of the reasons for this video to you.

Anyway, I hope you're well. I hope you're making the most of your time right now. Planning out your day at the beginning, and plan that day to provide value. In the meantime, take care of yourself.

Radically 'Think' Your Way to Safety

Posted by Vince Poscente on Tue, Jun 18, 2019 @ 12:17 PM

In the world of safety, are your results due to your actions or inactions? On the surface. Yes. Looking deeper, the answer is, "Uh-Oh!"

Check out The Cognitive Filter and how it specifically relates to an unsettling bias regarding safety training and compliance related workshops within organizations today.

It is easy to default to a simple assumption:

Action leads to Results. Or no action on your part will lead to results. But take a look at The Cognitive Filter below.

Cognitive Filter Graphic Low Res-1

We humans follow the cognitive sequence of:

  1. You process Information through your own, individual personal filter of Beliefs, Attitudes and Truths.
  2. That Information then gets interpreted by your specific Judgement.
  3. That Judgement will lead to an Action (or inAction).
  4. This (in)Action leads to a Result.
  5. The result is often in keeping with the Beliefs, Attitudes and Truths you had in the first place (otherwise known as a self-determined prophecy).

If we stopped here, all would be good in the world. But mistakes happen. Hurts happen. Incidents happen. Why? Predominantly because most of our Beliefs, Attitudes and Truths are swimming around in our own subconscious mind. In other words, you and I are not conscious of most of your Beliefs, Attitudes and Truths.

"Not true," you say. "I know, what I know." But that is your conscious mind talking.

Consider research by Dr. Lee Pulos who found that in a second of time, your conscious mind processes with 2,000 neurons of "conscious thought." While, in the same second, your subconscious mind is processing with four billion neurons.

The ratio between the activity in your conscious mind versus your subconscious mind is the exact same ratio between an ant and an elephant. Your ant, your conscious mind, is walking on the back of your elephantine, subconscious mind. Does the ant see and elephant? Nope. Only a grey, bumpy landscape. To the same degree, your conscious mind has little comprehension of awareness compared to the massive activity in the subconscious mind.

Bake on that one for a minute.

If someone asked you, "How well do you know your beliefs, attitudes and truths?" what would your answer be? "I know them really well."

But entertain the mind-bending reality, "You don't know, what you don't know."

Now, let's jump back to present-day safety training and compliance related workshops. Most of them are based on the simple formula:

Action --> Results

Action--> Results

Action --> Results

Okay. Take a breath. All is well. We just need an unconventional way to approach safety training. This is why this series of articles are under the banner of "Radical Safety." The antonym for "conventional" is "radical." Hence, radical safety is designed to help you approach safety training from a more wholistic approach.

Start with the end in mind and work your way backwards. (Chances are you have an existing approach to the first two items on the following list. Add to your conventional sequence with these additional steps.)

  1. What positive RESULTS do you want? Which negative RESULTS do you want to eliminate?
  2. What ACTIONS or INACTIONS are required?
  3. What JUDGEMENTS will set up the best ACTIONS?
  4. Two parts:
    1. What are the conscious BELIEFS, ATTITUDES and TRUTHS that exist?
    2. Uncover the subconscious BELIEFS, ATTITUDES and TRUTHS that exist.
  5. What "INFORMATION" input will help align a conscious and subconscious paradigm?
  6. Are your RESULTS in keeping with the BELIEFS, ATTITUDES and TRUTHS you have in the first place?

Steps 3 to 6 are entirely definable for everyone in your sphere of safety. Yes, Radical Safety has an accelerated approach to making that happen. And, over the course of the next few weeks, I will reveal those steps in subsequent articles. (Or, you can buy the book Radical Safety, when it comes out; or bring in our experts for a Radical Safety session.)

In the meantime, take an unconventional approach to how you deliver safety training. Lives depend on it.

Radical Safety - Use ELEPHantPOWER to Minimize Risk and Help Achieve Zero Incident

Posted by Vince Poscente on Wed, Feb 06, 2019 @ 05:48 PM

We take a lot of risks. Not just professionally, but in a general safety sense. We walk across busy streets, we hustle down stairs, and we drive 2-ton metal monstrosities at 70 miles an hour. And that's just the usual. Safe to say it's easy to discount just how important safety is. Or at least Vince Poscente thinks so.

He's a former Olympic Skier, Himalayan Expedition Leader, New York Times Bestselling Author, and he played clarinet in high school. And today on a brand new episode of Power Up! with NSA North Texas, Betti's sitting down with Vince to get to the bottom of what exactly safety means to people - and why we keep forgetting about it. But what exactly does "Radical Safety" mean? How has Vince made a business out of it? And is the secret to staying safe as easy as reshaping the way we think of safety?

Vince Poscente’s signature wit and wisdom combine with his perspective on the neuroscience of safety for a message you won’t soon forget. As Founder of Radical Safety, LLC, Vince travels the globe weaving a message of safety performance and minimizing operational risk by challenging each audience member to embrace a zero-incident mindset.

As a NY Times bestselling author, this Hall of Fame speaker can affect behavioral changes with practical insights from his stories of “recreational skier to Olympic skier in four years” and “guiding expeditions into the Himalayas, while naming mountains after every-day heroes.”

In this podcast, Vince delivers a fresh and high-energy perspective on Clarity, Commitment, Consistency, Confidence, and Control. This is the backbone of his entertaining, educational and motivational Radical Safety message to improve your existing safety competency model.
